FreeRadius

FreeRadius

I choose this task do FreeRadius server theme. I think that this server can be useful in future, because Its relates  to  networking. Radius server is controlling access to the Internet or internal networks, wireless networks, and integrated e-mail services. In addition, FreeRadius is high performance free RADIUS suite. Thus, I will introduce you with FreeRadius server.

First of all, I will write about FreeRadius history. FreeRADIUS was created in August 1999. This server authors are Alan DeKok and Miquel van Smoorenburg. Miquel had previously written the other RADIUS server, which also was successful. FreeRADIUS was started to create a new RADIUS server, using a modular design that would encourage more active community involvement. Modulus, which expanded and supported Radius server were LDAP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and many other databases. Also in future version added support for Virtual hosting, IPv6, VMPS, and a new policy language that simplifies many complex configurations. Thus, FreeRadius is very good version of Radius servers and that showed survey in 2006 that its user base totals 100 million people.

Second, I will talk about Radius server opportunities. RADIUS is a client/server protocol that runs in the application layer, using UDP as transport. The Remote Access Server, the Virtual Private Network server, the Network switch with port-based authentication, and the Network Access Server (NAS), are all gateways that control access to the network, and all have a RADIUS client component that communicates with the RADIUS server. The RADIUS server is usually a background process running on a UNIX or Windows NT machine. RADIUS serves three more important functions, to authenticate users or devices before granting them access to a network, to authorize those users or devices for certain network services and to account for usage of those services. Therefore, FreeRadius server have some very useful opportunities.

In conclusion, FreeRadius server is very useful for networkers. Good for security and have more good opportunities that makes this server very popular.
